After Rio, we went to Ilha Grande. It was a prison colony until 1994, but now it's a little vacation spot about 4 hours southwest of Rio.

It's a very ecological island...pretty "third world" in Freddie's estimation, but quite lovely despite the fact that most of the buildings look like they will crumble to the ground if it rains one more time this year. Most of my travel experience has come from working on a cruise ship or vacationing with my parents, who (most decidedly) do NOT...ahem...camp. So, I had to roll with the punches during our three days of roughing it in Ilha Grande. This really kept me going:

Kit-tay!

The owner of our pousada was a cat lover and didn't mind if we played with his cats. The kitten was especially friendly. She'd just waltz on into our room whenever she felt like it and demand to be picked up and cuddled.

Freddie just fell in L-O-V-E with her. He kept saying, "Oh let's take her home! Let's just pretend she crawled into one of our suitcases and we didn't know!"

We are cat-sitting this weekend and IT'S A VERY GOOD THING because:

1) I haven't had an indoor cat since 1996 and ...

2) Freddie's never had a indoor cat and...

3)...we have just discovered a MOUSE in the house!

Eeeeeeewwwwwww. Freddie saw a little blur of grey scamper across the living room floor last night. Gross! I am hoping my friend's cat is a good hunter, because I am very eager to scare this mouse away!

Fred and I have been thinking about babies a lot these days. (No! not real babies! "Babies"!!) We would really like to have a cat, but we also want a dog. We think it would be best to get them at the same time so they grow up together (maybe less territorial?) We even have a dog breed all picked out: Mexican hairless. I took a test on-line last year and it told me that Mexican hairless dogs are the best type for my personality, space, and time commitment.

Fred: "Can we name him Carlos?"
Erin: "What if we get a girl?"
Fred: "...Carlos!"
Erin: "Well - appropriate - since we support non-traditional casting and all."

We just don't know if having pets - even small ones - is viable for us right now. But it is fun to dream about it.

"Enough with the fur-babies! Where are the wedding pics?"(your comments here)
